SA: Pirates coach Ouaddou hospitalised after highway heroics turn tragic

ORLANDO Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou is fighting for his recovery in a Gauteng hospital in South Africa after a devastating road accident that has sent shockwaves through South African football.

The 46-year-old Moroccan legend and former Fulham defender was struck by a Nissan NP200 pickup truck on Sunday evening while performing an act of extraordinary courage – stopping to help victims of a highway collision on his team’s journey home from victory.

Ouaddou and five members of his backroom staff, including defender Tapelo Xoki, were rushed to hospital following the horrific incident on the R21 highway. The coaching staff had disembarked from the team bus after encountering a two-vehicle crash, displaying the same leadership qualities that have defined Ouaddou’s career both as player and coach.

Tragedy struck as the group attended the accident scene. A pickup truck collided with the stationary vehicles, inflicting serious injuries on the Good Samaritans who had stopped to help.

“Coach Ouaddou and several staff members disembarked from the team bus to assist those involved,” Orlando Pirates confirmed in an official statement. “Tragically, while attending to the scene, a Nissan NP200 vehicle collided with the stationary vehicles, striking the group and causing serious injuries.”

The incident occurred as the Buccaneers were returning from Gqeberha, riding high after a commanding 3-0 victory against Chippa United that had extended their strong start to the season under Ouaddou’s guidance.

Xoki now faces a knee scan to determine the full extent of his injuries, adding to concerns for a Pirates squad that has flourished under their Moroccan tactician since his appointment in June.

Ouaddou’s journey to this tragic moment has been one of remarkable resilience. The former Morocco international, who earned 58 caps for his country, carved out a reputation as a tenacious competitor during his Premier League stint with Fulham from 2001-2005. Though he managed just 38 appearances for the Cottagers after his £2 million move from Nancy, his defensive resolve never wavered.

That same fighting spirit was evident in his outstanding tenure at Marumo Gallants, which earned him the prestigious Orlando Pirates role. Under his stewardship, the Johannesburg giants have shown renewed vigour and tactical discipline in what has been a promising first season.

“At this stage, our priority is the health and well-being of our colleagues,” the club emphasised. “The Club has made arrangements to ensure that the affected individuals and their families receive all the necessary support during this difficult time.”

As Ouaddou battles his injuries, the South African football community has rallied behind a man whose instinct to help others in their moment of need exemplifies the character that has made him a respected figure throughout his career.

The coaching staff’s condition remains under close medical supervision, with Pirates promising regular updates as the situation develops. For now, the thoughts of the entire football fraternity are with Ouaddou and his colleagues as they begin their road to recovery.
