EGYPT: Tragedy strikes Galala University: 12 students lost, 33 injured in bus accident

On a fateful Tuesday morning, October 15, 2024, what should have been a routine journey for students of Galala University turned into a devastating tragedy. A bus carrying medical students overturned on the Galala Road in Ain Sokhna, claiming the lives of 12 young scholars and injuring 33 others.

Dr. Mohamed El-Tayeb, Deputy Minister of Health and Population, said that 22 of the injured students are in stable condition. These students, after undergoing thorough medical examinations, are under 24-hour observation and are expected to be discharged soon. However, the situation remains critical for 8 students who are currently in intensive care.

The response to the accident was swift and comprehensive. Suez Governorate’s ambulance service dispatched 30 ambulances to the scene, working tirelessly to transport and treat the injured. State agencies, including the Ministry of Health and Population, mobilized immediately. Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Health, personally directed officials to the accident site and ensured around-the-clock monitoring of the injured, with hourly medical reports being provided.

In the wake of this heart-wrenching incident, Dr. Maya Morsy, Minister of Social Solidarity, has instructed that necessary aid be provided to the families of the victims. The academic community of Galala University, led by Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Adel El-Adawy, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and Dr. Mohamed El-Shenawy, University President, expressed their profound sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
