Kenya’s police chief first to resign as Ruto plans government overhaul

IN a significant development following Kenya’s recent national protests, Police Chief Japhet Koome has become the first and most senior civil servant to voluntarily resign. This comes after President William Ruto’s dramatic decision to fire the entire cabinet in response to demonstrations that have left over 39 dead and several injured.

Koome’s resignation on Friday marks a turning point in the ongoing political crisis. The police force faced intense criticism for its conduct during last month’s anti-government protests, where officers were accused of using excessive force, including tear gas, water cannons, and live ammunition against demonstrators.

President Ruto, who took office in September 2022, has announced plans to form a government of national unity. He aims to appoint “servant leaders” who will focus on delivering services to Kenyans, addressing the protesters’ demands for far-reaching political changes to tackle corruption and poor governance.

The protests, initially sparked by proposed tax increases, have evolved into broader calls for reform. Some activists are now demanding Ruto’s resignation. The president has since scrapped the tax hikes, but demonstrations have continued.

Amnesty International has called for an independent investigation into the death of Denzel Omondi, a protester whose body was found in a quarry outside Nairobi last week. Additionally, at least eight other bodies were discovered in a quarry in Mukuru, a collection of Nairobi slums, raising further concerns about potential human rights violations.

As Kenya grapples with these challenges, the resignation of Police Chief Koome signals a potential shift in the government’s approach to addressing public grievances and restoring trust in state institutions.
