A nationwide manhunt is underway for Collins Jumaisi, suspected to be Kenya’s worst serial killer after he escaped from prison. According to police, Jumaisi has confessed to killing 42 women, beginning with his wife.
Jumaisi broke out of the Gigiri police station in Nairobi on Tuesday, along with 12 Eritrean nationals, according to police spokesperson Resila Onyango. He had been arrested last month in connection with the discovery of at least six bodies wrapped in plastic bags in Kware quarry, a former quarry now used as a rubbish dump.
While police claim Jumaisi admitted to the murders of 42 women, including his wife, his lawyer has told a court that the confession was obtained under torture. Prosecutors deny any mistreatment of the suspect.
The escape of this high-profile suspect has intensified concerns about security in Kenya’s prison system and sparked a large-scale search operation across the country.
