ISUZU POWERS EDUCATION REVOLUTION: Literacy programme transforms young lives

IN a bold move that parallels the relentless power of their high-performance engines, Isuzu Motors South Africa (IMSAf) has turbocharged education across Nelson Mandela Bay with their groundbreaking Rally to Read programme.

The iconic Japanese automotive giant has shifted its community engagement into high gear for a second consecutive year, accelerating literacy development in primary schools with the same precision engineering that defines their legendary vehicles.

“The Rally to Read initiative has enabled us to realise our aspiration of positive social impact and investing in meaningful and sustainable education outcomes in communities,” declares Celestin Ndhlovu, Vice President of Planning, Marketing and Corporate Affairs. “The transformation we’re witnessing in these schools affirms the power of collaboration, community, and the consistent investment in youth development.”

Since roaring off the starting line in 2024, IMSAf has already transformed the educational landscape for over 600 young learners, with an ambitious trajectory to reach 4,000 by 2030. The programme has delivered a powerful combination of library resources, classroom materials, and cutting-edge digital learning tools to three Gqeberha-based schools – creating an unstoppable momentum in literacy development.

The impact has been nothing short of spectacular. Teachers report dramatic improvements in reading confidence and comprehension, with school management teams implementing sustainable practices that will keep this educational engine running long after the initial three-year programme concludes.

“Seeing the impact of this programme unfold over time reminds us why we do what we do,” says Sibhekaphi Sibanda, Project Manager at READ Educational Trust. “Together with ISUZU, we are not just donating books—we are building the capacity of schools, teachers, and families to support literacy development that will change lives.”

For 2025, Isuzu is upgrading the programme with next-generation features, expanding to Intermediate and Senior Phase learners (Grades 4-7) while introducing advanced digital literacy training that will empower teachers to harness artificial intelligence for creating culturally relevant stories.

At Khulile Primary School, Principal Linda Nonxuba has witnessed the transformative power firsthand: “We have seen significant progress amongst our learners since the inception of the programme. They are now able to read with confidence and understanding. The additional training and support offered to our staff has also empowered them in their day-to-day teaching activities.”

With the same reliability and endurance that has made Isuzu a trusted name worldwide, this educational initiative continues to demonstrate how corporate power, when properly harnessed, can drive communities toward a brighter, more literate future.
