New Chinese SUV brand makes South African debut with urban-adventure crossovers

JETOUR has officially entered the competitive South African SUV market with the launch of two versatile models designed to capitalize on the nation’s growing preference for crossover vehicles.

The Chinese automaker introduced its Dashing and X70 Plus models to South African consumers amid a broader market trend that saw SUVs and crossovers claim nearly half of all passenger vehicle sales in 2024, despite an overall decline in new vehicle purchases nationwide.

The Jetour Dashing, a five-seater SUV, features a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine generating 115 kW of power and 230 Nm of torque. Equipped with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission and front-wheel drive configuration, the vehicle includes electronic stability control, traction control, and specialized hill management systems.

Its larger sibling, the X70 Plus, offers seven-seat capacity while maintaining the same powertrain specifications. Both models feature elevated ground clearance and 19-inch alloy wheels, positioning them as dual-purpose vehicles capable of handling both urban commuting and light off-road conditions.

Jetour’s market entry aligns with its global “Travel+” strategy, which focuses on delivering affordable vehicles that combine modern amenities with versatile performance characteristics. The brand is targeting family buyers who require space for daily urban activities while occasionally venturing onto dirt roads for weekend getaways.

Industry analysts note that while the current Jetour lineup is primarily designed for on-road use with light off-road capabilities, the manufacturer plans to introduce more rugged models in the future for consumers seeking genuine off-road performance.
