From World Cup hero to court battle: Thomas Partey pleads not guilty to serious charges

IN a dramatic span of just nine days, Thomas Partey has navigated two vastly different battlegrounds: helping Ghana secure a crucial World Cup qualifier victory and facing serious criminal charges in a London courtroom.

The 32-year-old Ghana international has been charged with five counts of rape against two women and one count of sexual assault against a third woman, with all alleged offences occurring between April 2021 and June 2022 while he was playing for Premier League club Arsenal.

On Wednesday, Partey appeared at Southwark Crown Court and pleaded not guilty to all charges. The midfielder, who joined Spanish club Villarreal in August after his Arsenal contract expired, spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth before entering his plea.

The court appearance came just over a week after Partey played a pivotal role in Ghana’s critical 1-0 victory over Mali on September 8, 2025. The Black Stars’ midfield anchor, Thomas Partey, played a key role in managing the game and absorbing Mali’s late pressure as Ghana maintained their position at the top of their World Cup qualifying group.

Ghana defeated Mali 1-0 in a key 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Monday night in Accra, putting them in a strong position to secure a place at next year’s showpiece event in North America. The victory was crucial for Ghana’s qualification hopes, with Partey serving as the midfield general who helped repel Mali’s attacking efforts throughout the match.

Legal Battle Ahead

Two counts of rape relate to one complainant. Three counts of rape relate to a second complainant. One count of sexual assault relates to a third complainant, according to charges filed by the Crown Prosecution Service on July 4, 2025.

Partey was released on bail following Wednesday’s court appearance, with his trial scheduled to begin on November 2, 2026. The proceedings are expected to last between six and eight weeks, potentially overlapping with the 2026 World Cup if Ghana qualifies for the tournament.

The timing of the charges has created a complex situation for both club and country. Partey was charged just four days after leaving Arsenal when his contract expired on June 30, 2025. Despite the serious allegations, Spanish soccer club Villarreal announced the signing of Thomas Partey on Thursday, weeks after the midfielder was charged in England with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

Continuing Career Under Scrutiny

The midfielder made his Villarreal debut in their Champions League clash against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night, coming on as a second-half substitute. His appearance drew loud boos from Spurs supporters every time he touched the ball, highlighting the controversy surrounding his case.

Partey has denied wrongdoing and cooperated with authorities during voluntary interviews over the last two years, according to reports. The allegations have been under investigation since 2022, with the formal charges only filed in July 2025.

Arsenal signed Partey from Atletico Madrid for €50 million in 2020, where he became a key first-team player before his departure this summer. His international career has remained largely unaffected, with Ghana continuing to select him for crucial World Cup qualifiers.

The case has drawn significant media attention, not only due to Partey’s high profile as an international footballer but also because of the serious nature of the charges. “The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised the prosecution of Thomas Partey for multiple counts of rape – after carefully reviewing a comprehensive file of evidence”, said Jaswant Narwal of the Crown Prosecution Service.

As Ghana continues their push toward World Cup qualification, Partey faces the challenge of maintaining his international career while preparing for a lengthy legal battle that could define his future both on and off the pitch. The midfielder’s next court appearance is scheduled for November 2026, with the football world watching closely as one of Africa’s most prominent players navigates this unprecedented situation.

The case underscores the complex intersection of professional sports and legal accountability, as Partey attempts to continue his career while the English justice system addresses the serious allegations against him.
