SA rap star’s murder caught on video

LAUGHTER, hugs and then bullets – death.

It’s an hour before midnight and the lifeless body of one of South Africa’s famous music superstars lay sprawled outside a popular restaurant on one of Durban’s famous streets – Florida Road. On the ground, outside Wish restaurant, wearing grey pants and a black t-shirt was AKA, a multi-award winning rap star, gunned down by an assassin minutes after he had dinner with friends.

Moments earlier, the gunman, small framed and wearing a cream wool skull cap, black pants and white sneakers, comes from the back as AKA turns to speak to someone. In quick action, he points the gun at the rap superstar’s head and fires.

After he fires, the gunman whizzes his way past parked cars into the night.

AKA collapses to the ground, and those around him scatter as others a few meters away rush in to help. Murder in the night, in the middle of Durban’s famous street – Florida Road.

Seconds before he was shot dead, AKA gave a bear hug, spinning him twice. As he turned from the friend towards another friend – chef Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane, the gunman pounced. Both men died on the spot.

These are the final moments, captured on video, of the rap star – born Kiernan Jarryd Forbes (35). He was killed minutes after dinner with friends. Videos of his last supper went viral on social media.

A second CCTV video, which captured the shooting from a different angle, shows the gunman waiting across Florida Road and crossing it as soon as AKA leaves Wish restaurant bids his friends farewell.

A few hours later, his parents Tony and Lynn Forbes confirmed his passing in a statement: ”It is with extreme sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our beloved son. ‘Our son was loved, and he gave love in return.”

A few hours after his son’s death, Tony, wearing all black, laid flowers at the spot where he was killed.

South Africans have taken to social media platforms to express their shock at the murder of the rap star and have flooded his family with condolences. Social media has also been awash with conspiracies about those behind AKA’s murder.

Musicians, DJs and other celebrities visited AKA’s family home in Johannesburg to pay their respects. They included DJ Zinhle, Dj Oskido, Friend and Musician Da L.E.S  and Kabelo Mabalane.

“I don’t think I have enough words to express my shock. I just woke up and I can’t believe what I’m hearing about AKA. This is absolutely tragic. What a loss. Condolences to his family and everyone who was connected to him. The world is unreal,” DJ MoFlava said on Twitter.

AKA was in the headlines last year after his fiancee Anele Tembe died tragically in Cape Town.
