AFRICAN MIRROR REPORTER

A  serial rapist whose reign of terror around Pretoria, South Africa, lasted five years and whose victims included a 14-year-old girl was yesterday sentenced to five life terms plus 988 years in prison.

Sello Abraham Maponya was convicted of 72 counts of rape, robbery with aggravating circumstances, housebreaking and assault, offences he committee between 2014 ad 2019.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said in some instances he broke into the victim’s house, robbed them and then proceeded to rape them, either alone or with accomplices.

Maponya was arrested on March 20, 2019 in Mamelodi, outside Pretoria for cellphone theft. His DNA samples were taken and they linked him to the cases opened at various police stations around Pretoria over a period of five years.

During his trial, Maponya initially pleaded not guilty to all charges but later changed his plea.

The youngest of his victims, then 14 years-old when she was raped, but now 19 years, told the court that she found it difficult to concentrate in classes and dropped grades as a result of the violation.

Another victim disclosed to the court that six months after she was raped, she tested positive for HIV/Aids.

Prosecutor Advocate Pieter Coetzer described Maponya as a textbook serial rapist. He said Maponya’s heinous crimes destroyed the lives of his victims. The NPA welcomed the sentence and commended the work done by the police and the prosecution.

Judge Papi Mosopa ordered that Maponya’s name must be recorded in the National Register for Sexual Offender and that the sentence should not run concurrently.
