IN a dramatic escalation of South Africa’s political landscape, the African National Congress (ANC) has definitively severed ties with former President Jacob Zuma, expelling him from the party he once led after he formed the rival Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) Party and dramatically reshaped the national political narrative.
The ANC’s National Disciplinary Committee of Appeal (NDCA) upheld Zuma’s expulsion, delivering a scathing indictment of his actions that fundamentally challenges the party’s foundational principles of organizational loyalty and collective accountability.
In an unprecedented political twist, Zuma’s newly formed MK Party not only contested the recent national elections but emerged as the official opposition, delivering a stunning rebuke to his former political home. This remarkable transformation has left political analysts speculating about Zuma’s potential political resurrection, drawing parallels to Donald Trump’s persistent political influence in the United States.
The ANC’s statement was unequivocal, describing Zuma’s behaviour as “the highest form of ill-discipline” and a “direct assault on the historical mission” of the liberation movement. By establishing a rival party, Zuma was accused of converting himself into a “tool for destabilisation,” fundamentally undermining the organization’s unity.
With the 2026 local government elections on the horizon, Zuma’s MK Party is positioned as a formidable challenger, promising a heated political contest that could further erode the ANC’s long-standing political dominance.
Political experts are not dismissing the possibility of a Zuma comeback, suggesting that his political resilience and significant support base could see him attempt a return to national leadership in the coming years.
The expulsion marks a definitive moment in South Africa’s post-apartheid political evolution, signalling the ANC’s commitment to internal discipline even at the cost of losing a significant political figure who was once considered a cornerstone of the movement.
