Tragedy strikes amidst Sudan’s civil war: military plane crash claims 46 lives

IN a devastating incident that underscores the ongoing turmoil in Sudan, a military plane crashed into a residential area near the Wadi Sayidna military airport in Omdurman, killing at least 46 people, including a senior military commander. The crash occurred late on Tuesday, according to reports from the Khartoum state media office, as cited by Reuters.

Major General Bahr Ahmed, a high-ranking officer who previously commanded the army across the entire capital, was among those who lost their lives in the tragic event. Military sources indicate that technical issues were likely the cause of the crash, which also left 10 people injured.

This incident comes at a critical juncture in Sudan’s civil war, which has ravaged the country since April 2023. The conflict began as a power struggle between Sudan’s army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and his former deputy, Mohamed Hamadan Daglo, who leads the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The war has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced over 10 million people, creating one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.

The crash occurred just a day after the RSF claimed responsibility for downing a Russian-made Ilyushin aircraft in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, further escalating tensions in the region. The Sudanese army has been making significant advances against the RSF in central Sudan and Khartoum, but the conflict continues to exact a heavy toll on civilians and military personnel alike.

As the situation in Sudan remains volatile, international observers fear further escalation, particularly following the RSF’s announcement to establish a parallel government in territories under their control. The United Nations has warned of potential worsening conditions, emphasizing the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

In the aftermath of the plane crash, emergency teams rushed to assist the injured, including children, while search efforts continued to locate any remaining victims under the rubble. The incident highlights the dire circumstances faced by both military personnel and civilians in Sudan, where the ongoing civil war continues to claim lives and destabilize the region.
