Mahama’s billion-cedi boost: Transforming Ghana’s security forces to defeat crime and protect citizens

HANA’s President John Dramani Mahama has launched a robust initiative to combat crime and enhance public safety in Ghana, announcing a substantial investment of 1 billion Ghana cedis aimed at retooling the country’s security and emergency services. This commitment follows his recent shake-up of leadership within the security sector, including the appointment of a new Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, tasked with addressing evolving security challenges such as violent crime, cybercrime, and organised criminal activities.

Key Components of the Security Upgrade

  • Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS): The President highlighted the critical need to replace outdated and malfunctioning fire tenders, some of which have been in service for nearly a decade. This upgrade is intended to reduce delays in emergency response times, which have caused public frustration. Mahama emphasised that delays are often due to equipment shortages rather than negligence by fire personnel.
  • Ghana Police Service: To better protect officers confronting armed robbers and other criminals, the police will receive armoured vehicles to enhance their safety during patrols. The President stressed the importance of equipping police officers with modern tools and technology, including improved intelligence capabilities and community policing strategies, to restore public trust and effectively combat crime.
  • Immigration and Prisons Services: Recognising mobility challenges, new vehicles will be allocated to these services to improve operational efficiency and strengthen public safety.

President Mahama’s administration is focused on a multipronged approach that not only supplies equipment but also reforms policing methods to tackle complex and emerging threats such as cybercrime, terrorism, and transnational crime networks. He called for public understanding and support for security personnel working under difficult conditions and urged cooperation between law enforcement and communities to build a safer nation.

This initiative builds on previous government efforts to reduce armed robbery and criminality, with Mahama having long emphasised the importance of creating a secure environment conducive to investment and development. The current investment complements ongoing reforms and resource allocations made under prior administrations, including the procurement of vehicles, drones, and helicopters to enhance police operations.

Conclusion

President Mahama’s announcement of a 1 billion cedi investment marks a significant step in Ghana’s war against crime and lawlessness. By modernising equipment, enhancing mobility, and reforming security institutions, the government aims to restore public confidence, improve emergency response, and ensure the safety of all Ghanaians. This comprehensive approach reflects a deep commitment to national security and the well-being of the citizenry.
