Africa in the Epstein files: What the DOJ documents actually reveal

THE United States Department of Justice has released over 3.5 million pages of documents, 2,000 videos, and 180,000 images related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein under the Epstein Files Transparency Act signed in November 2025. While social media has been rife with unverified allegations, a careful examination of credible reporting reveals several verified African connections in these files.

The 2002 Clinton Foundation Africa Trip

The most extensively documented African connection involves a September 2002 humanitarian trip to Africa. Former President Bill Clinton, actor Kevin Spacey, and comedian Chris Tucker flew on Epstein’s private jet for a five-day tour of Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, Mozambique, and South Africa to draw attention to the fight against AIDS.

Photos released in the Epstein files show Clinton on the Africa trip with other prominent people, including actors Chris Tucker and Kevin Spacey. The trip was organised by the Clinton Foundation and focused on HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment programs. Flight log records show this African tour accounted for 11 of the 26 total flights Clinton took on Epstein’s aircraft between 2002 and 2003.

Kevin Spacey, who participated in the trip, recently addressed the journey publicly. In a 2024 interview, he stated he was unaware of who Epstein was at the time and expressed concern about the presence of young girls on the plane, saying he “didn’t want to be around this guy because I felt he put the president at risk.”

Clinton’s spokesperson has stated the former president knows nothing about the crimes Epstein committed and took four trips on Epstein’s plane between 2002 and 2003 in connection with Clinton Foundation work. Being pictured in the files does not indicate any wrongdoing, and Clinton has not been accused of any crimes related to Epstein’s trafficking network.

Epstein’s African Travel Documents

Passport records obtained through public records requests show Epstein requested a second passport in 2011, writing: “Please issue me a second passport so I may have the 3 visas issued for Africa while I am using my current passport in France”. This request came three years after Epstein had pleaded guilty in Florida to solicitation of an underage girl.

The passport files, spanning from the early 1980s to 2019, reveal Epstein’s extensive international travel patterns. Among the travel documents released by House Democrats were passports from multiple countries and a South African national identity card, though most identifying information was redacted.

Jacob Zuma’s London Dinner with Epstein

Among the most significant African revelations is the documentation of a private dinner between former South African President Jacob Zuma and Jeffrey Epstein in London in March 2010.

Zuma was in the United Kingdom from March 3-5, 2010, on a state visit at the invitation of Queen Elizabeth II. It was his first state visit to the UK since becoming president, and he was accompanied by his wife, Tobeka Madiba Zuma. The couple stayed at Buckingham Palace and attended official state banquets.

According to emails in the Epstein files, on March 4, 2010, an individual identified as Mark Lloyd sent an invitation to a woman named Vera on behalf of Epstein for “a small dinner tomorrow night for President Jacob Zuma of South Africa at the Ritz Hotel at 7:00 pm.” Lloyd described the recipient as someone who would “add some real glamour to the occasion.”

The recipient, who identified herself as a Russian model represented by Select Model Agency, accepted the invitation. A separate email from Epstein to Peter Mandelson, who served in the cabinets of Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, stated that Lloyd was “having dinner for Zuma tomorrow night at the Ritz” and that Epstein had “invited a beautiful Russian” to attend.

The day after the dinner, on March 6, Lloyd sent Epstein an email praising the Russian model as “magnificent” and “that rare combination of elegance, charm and natural beauty.” The email also noted that “we all found Jacob Zuma a much more impressive character than we had expected, he displayed more gravitas and none of the macho bluster he is generally portrayed as having by the tabloid press.”

In a response to another correspondent on March 6, Epstein referred to the Russian model as “my new future ex.”

This dinner took place on Zuma’s final evening in London, after his last official engagement – a meeting with NGOs at South Africa House on the afternoon of March 5. There has been no previous public indication that Zuma and Epstein had any connection.

Somaliland Appears in the Files

One of the more unusual African mentions involves Somaliland, the self-declared independent region of Somalia. A 2018 email shows Epstein receiving a document about Somaliland’s international recognition from the chief executive of port operator DP World.

The DP World connection relates to Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, the Dubai-based logistics executive whose correspondence with Epstein appeared extensively in the files. The documents show what investigative outlet The Lever described as “dozens, if not hundreds” of emails between the two men between 2007 and 2018, though the specific Somaliland references appear to relate to business discussions rather than any confirmed illegal activity.

Somaliland has gained renewed attention after Israel announced in late 2025 that it formally recognised the territory, a move that drew regional and international criticism.

Passport Documents from African Countries

The released documents include various African travel documents. Among images released by House Democrats are a South African national identity card and various passports, with Democrats stating they belonged to “women whom Jeffrey Epstein and his conspirators were engaging”.

The passport records also show Epstein frequently applied for multiple passports, citing the need to avoid conflicting visa stamps when travelling to different regions. His travel intentions included various African destinations, though the specific nature of these planned visits remains unclear in the publicly available documents.

South African Survivor Juliette Bryant

South African model Juliette Bryant has publicly shared her account of being groomed and trafficked by Epstein after meeting him in Cape Town in 2002 during the same trip where Clinton, Kevin Spacey, and Chris Tucker were present. Bryant was 20 years old at the time and was an aspiring model.

Bryant told The Daily Beast she was approached by women who told her Epstein had connections to Victoria’s Secret and could help her modelling career. She met Clinton at a restaurant where he shook her hand and “just kept holding onto” it, then saw him again the next day when she was invited to show Epstein her modelling portfolio, recalling that “Clinton walked through the room and said, ‘Hi guys.’ He and Epstein were sharing the presidential suite”.

Bryant stated that Clinton’s presence gave Epstein credibility, saying, “I wouldn’t go with some random man to the Caribbean. He seemed legitimate. Clinton gave him credibility”. After being flown to New York, Bryant alleges she was then taken to Epstein’s private island in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where she was repeatedly sexually assaulted between 2002 and 2004.

Bryant filed a lawsuit against the Epstein estate in November 2019 and has spoken publicly in multiple documentaries, including the BBC’s “House of Maxwell.” In January 2026, Daily Maverick published an extensive interview with Bryant in which she described her experience, stating, “Epstein was demonic. He fed off the terror”.

Clinton’s spokesperson has maintained that the former president knew nothing about Epstein’s crimes. Being present on the Africa trip does not indicate any wrongdoing by Clinton, and he has not been accused of any crimes related to Epstein’s trafficking network.

What the Files Don’t Show

It’s critical to note what has not been verified in credible reporting:

  • No major news organisations have confirmed specific allegations about Kenyan children’s homes, leaders, or a “boys or girls” email
  • Claims about particular emails discussing child trafficking in Kenya have not been substantiated by established media outlets
  • Allegations about specific Ethiopian politicians or detailed Libyan extortion schemes in the files remain unverified

The Jacob Zuma dinner at the Ritz is documented in the released emails, but the emails show only that the dinner occurred – they do not indicate any criminal wrongdoing. Similarly, being mentioned in the files or appearing in photographs does not constitute evidence of illegal activity. Many prominent individuals appear in the documents simply because they had social or professional contact with Epstein before his crimes became public knowledge.

The Broader Pattern

What the verified African connections reveal is Epstein’s pattern of leveraging connections to wealthy, powerful, and famous individuals across the globe. The 2002 Africa trip, undertaken for a legitimate humanitarian purpose through the Clinton Foundation, shows how Epstein positioned himself among influential people engaged in international philanthropy and development work.

The 2010 dinner with Zuma demonstrates Epstein’s continued cultivation of relationships with heads of state and political leaders. The casual nature of the dinner invitation – arranged on short notice at the Ritz Hotel with a Russian model as a guest – reflects the social circles Epstein moved in even after his 2008 conviction in Florida.

The documents also confirm that Epstein maintained extensive international travel even after his 2008 conviction in Florida, though new laws passed in 2016 eventually restricted the travel of registered sex offenders.

Ongoing Releases and Unanswered Questions

The Department of Justice has stated that the January 30, 2026, release of 3.5 million pages would be its final document dump, though this claim has drawn bipartisan criticism from lawmakers who believe more material should be disclosed. Many documents contain extensive redactions, with some pages entirely blacked out.

Victims’ advocates continue to call for greater transparency, while emphasising that the focus should remain on justice for Epstein’s victims rather than speculation about every prominent person mentioned in the files.

As of February 2026, no additional criminal charges have been filed against anyone else in connection with Epstein’s trafficking network, despite ongoing public pressure for accountability.
