CHAHANA Takiou, Director of Publication of the Malian biweekly newspaper 22 Septembre, was detained by the National Cybercrime Unit on charges of “undermining the credibility of the State” through the country’s judicial institutions — an arrest that press freedom organisations say stems directly from statements he made at an international media forum held in the capital less than a week ago.
The detention order, issued by the Prosecutor of the Republic attached to the National Cybercrime Unit, follows remarks Takiou allegedly made during the Forum Panafricain des Médias (FOPAME), which ran in Bamako from 3 to 6 June 2026. The forum, described by organisers as a successful inaugural edition, had drawn journalists and media professionals from across the continent.
Mali’s Maison de la Presse and a coalition of professional media organisations issued a communiqué on Monday condemning the detention as a serious violation of press freedom and freedom of opinion, and warning that it sent a deeply troubling signal to the journalism community at large.
“This situation sends a particularly troubling signal to the entire profession and undermines efforts aimed at strengthening the image of Mali as it confronts a multidimensional crisis,” the communiqué stated.
The organisations expressed alarm that the incarceration came immediately in the aftermath of an internationally attended media event, calling the timing damaging not only to the country’s press landscape but to its broader institutional image.
Maison de la Presse President Bandiougou Danté, a Knight of the National Order, signed the communiqué and called on all media stakeholders to remain mobilised in anticipation of coordinated action in response to what the organisations described as a flagrant and grave attack on press freedom.
The arrest of Takiou — a veteran print journalist heading one of Mali’s established publications — adds to growing concerns over press freedom in the Sahel nation, which has been governed by a military transitional authority since the 2021 coup. Civil society and journalist bodies have repeatedly flagged deteriorating conditions for independent reporting in the country.
No statement had been issued by Malian authorities or the cybercrime unit at the time of publication. 22 Septembre had not publicly commented on the detention.
