Russia-Ukraine war indirectly fought on African soil

THE ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has taken an unexpected turn, spilling onto African soil with Ukraine being accused of involvement in the deaths of 50 Russian soldiers in Mali. This incident, which also claimed the lives of 10 Malian soldiers, occurred during a clash with rebels two weeks ago. The accusations of Kyiv’s involvement have led to a significant diplomatic fallout, resulting in Mali severing ties with Ukraine.

The presence of Russian forces in Mali is part of a broader international struggle for influence in West Africa, with Western powers such as France and the United States on one side, and Russia on the other. This geopolitical tension has now been further complicated by the alleged Ukrainian involvement.

In response to these accusations, Ukraine has vehemently denied any role in the attack in northern Mali that resulted in the deaths of Malian soldiers and Wagner fighters in July. The Ukrainian government has described Mali’s decision to cut diplomatic ties over the incident as “short-sighted and hasty.”

The controversy stems from comments made by Andriy Yusov, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, who stated that Malian rebels had received “necessary” information to conduct the attack. However, Yusov did not explicitly confirm Kyiv’s involvement in the conflict.

Ukraine’s foreign ministry expressed regret over Mali’s decision, arguing that it was made without a thorough investigation of the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident. The ministry stated, “Ukraine unconditionally adheres to the norms of international law, the inviolability of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other countries.” They also reserved the right to take all necessary political and diplomatic measures in response to Mali’s actions.

The incident in question involved northern Tuareg rebels who claimed to have killed at least 84 Russian Wagner mercenaries and 47 Malian soldiers during days of intense fighting in northern Mali. This appears to be the heaviest defeat suffered by the Wagner Group since it began supporting Mali’s military authorities in their fight against insurgent groups two years ago.

Mali’s government has accused Ukraine of admitting involvement in what they described as a “cowardly, treacherous and barbaric attack by armed terrorist groups.” This accusation has further strained the already tense international relations in the region, highlighting the complex web of alliances and conflicts that characterize the current geopolitical landscape in West Africa.

As the situation continues to develop, the international community watches closely to see how this new dimension of the Russia-Ukraine conflict will impact the delicate balance of power in Africa and beyond.
